Q&A with Elizabeth Ochoa ’26

Why are you engaged with the Goldfarb Center?

I value the opportunity to foster a healthy and accepting community for students of all backgrounds. Navigating through this institution as a first generation Mexican American student, brings me the opportunity to introduce new perspectives and values to this campus, in representation of other students who might identify with me bringing awareness to issues that might be underrepresented.

What do you think is the most interesting thing happening right now in public affairs?

A current public affair that peaks my interest is the current status of the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. As of September of 2022, the renewal of DACA permits resumed, however no new applications are being accepted. Seeing first hand how positively this policy has impacted my loved ones, providing them with the opportunity to legally work and continue their education, it is of great importance that this country continues providing the immigrant community with equitable employment opportunities and access to higher education. As the fight for the resumption of DACA continues, it is my hope that this country will soon provide immigrant communities with the proper resources to have equal ability to prosper.

What does leadership mean to you as someone on the Goldfarb Student Executive Board?

While the voice of a leader is of great significance, such a voice holds its truest value when it is effectively representing those who elected them. Being a leader means voicing the concerns of all in an equitable manner ensuring the greater good. I hold my position on the student executive board with the understanding that I am the representation of students like myself, and one of my main goals is to ensure that their concerns are heard, and resolved.

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about for this year?

Considering that this year’s theme for the Goldfarb Center is healthcare, I am most excited to hear the concerns of students regarding our health center and healthcare system, and working hand in hand to find solutions and create amazing changes!
