Q&A with Susannah Swan ’23

Why are you engaged with the Goldfarb Center?

I think Goldfarb offers a really unique opportunity for students to not only pursue interests in public policy and current events but also engage with a number of community members, students, and professors who often bring a wealth of information, personal experiences, and perspectives to the table. I believe that it is incredibly important to be a mindful and engaged participant when it comes to local and national policy and believe that Goldfarb continues to help me develop the skills to do so.

What does leadership mean to you as someone on the Goldfarb Student Executive Board?

While I only joined the executive board this past year, Goldfarb has already helped me develop effective and persuasive communication skills when speaking to peers and faculty members about long term goals for the board. In addition, I have learned the importance of approaching all events in an interdisciplinary manner while ensuring the voices of all potential stakeholders may be heard. I have grown to develop both confidence in sharing my ideas while also approaching every conservation with respect and ensuring everyones’ thoughts and experiences are recognized and uplifted..

What do you think is the most interesting thing happening right now in public affairs?

I am very interested in investigating policy regarding harm reduction at the local level and specifically legislation that addresses both the magnitude of the fentanyl crisis and the disproportionate impact it has on low socioeconomic rural communities. In addition, I am interested in patent policy, the pharmaceutical industry, and discussion of potential realities of universal healthcare in the United States.

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about for this year?

I am so excited to help shape the direction of Goldfarb by drafting the board’s first constitution while bringing pragmatic and thought-provoking speakers to campus to discuss issues of public health, equity in medicine, and much more.
