U.S. Presidential Leadership During Times of Crisis

The Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs at Colby College will host a virtual public panel discussion on March 11th at 7:00-8:00 P.M. to examine U.S. Presidential Leadership During Times of Crisis.

The panel will discuss the Trump and Biden responses to the global pandemic as well as the responses of past presidents to other types of crises. We are hoping to have you join us as we welcome Tamara Keith, White House Correspondent for NPR, Andrew Rudalevige, Chair of Government and Legal Studies and Thomas Brackett Reed Professor of Government at Bowdoin College, and our very own Nicholas Jacobs, Visiting Assistant Professor of Government at Colby College.

The event will be moderated by Goldfarb Student Executive Board member Lukas Alexander ’22 and Colby Professor of Sociology Christel Kesler.

Panel Member Bios

Professor Jacobs

Professor Jacobs is a political scientist who writes about federalism, presidential politics, and public policy. He teaches American politics and research methods in the Department of Government at Colby College. His scholarly work has appeared or is forthcoming in Perspectives on Politics, Political Science Quarterly, Publius: The Journal of Federalism, Presidential Studies Quarterly, Political Research Quarterly, Studies in American Political Development, Journal of Policy History, Education and Urban Society, and The Forum. I study American political institutions: their historical origins, how they develop policy, and their feedback on public opinion.

Tamara Keith

Tamara Keith has been a White House correspondent for NPR since 2014 and co-hosts the NPR Politics Podcast, the top political news podcast in America. Keith has chronicled the Trump administration from day one, putting this unorthodox presidency in context for NPR listeners, from early morning tweets to executive orders and investigations. She covered the final two years of the Obama presidency, and during the 2016 presidential campaign she was assigned to cover Hillary Clinton. In 2018, Keith was elected to serve on the board of the White House Correspondents’ Association.

Andrew Rudalevige

Andy Rudalevige arrived at Bowdoin in 2012 after twelve years in the political science department at Dickinson College, most recently as Walter E. Beach ’56 Distinguished Chair. He studies American political institutions, with an emphasis on the modern presidency and interbranch relations. His most recent book is By Executive Order: Bureaucratic Management and the Limits of Presidential Power (Princeton University Press), which tracks the role of the wider executive branch in the formulation of directives normally thought of as “unilateral.”
